The National Cancer Institute has devoted an entire section of their website to adolescents and young adults with cancer.

From the site: "Nearly 70,000 adolescents and young adults (ages 15-39) learn they have cancer each year in the United States. This portal offers links to resources for questions about cancer, its treatment, clinical trials, and issues that may be faced after treatment. It also contains links to research studies and reports."

The Cancer in the Classroom meeting today was filled with educators, support staff and families who are supporting children coping with a cancer diagnosis. Watch for materials to be added to this site about the variety of topics discussed.

One of the most important pieces discussed is to keep the lines of communication open. Kids need to talk about cancer and will discuss at different times as they grow and can process information in a new way.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease.

For men, the most common cancer is prostate cancer. For women, the most common cancer is breast cancer. However, the cancer than causes the most deaths for both men and women is lung cancer.
