The Goin' Bald for Bucks Experience

Corner

A new school year means a new opportunity to host a Goin’ Bald for Bucks event! And it doesn’t stop at the classroom—organizations, clubs and individuals can participate too.

But what is Goin’ Bald for Bucks all about? Marla Schifano, a teacher at Lake Shore High School—where Goin’ Bald for Bucks was founded in 2002—shares her thoughts on the program’s impact and how your school or organization can get involved.

How do you feel about the community’s involvement in Goin’ Bald for Bucks? Awestruck!  Our community is supportive and incredibly generous.  It is very moving to see everyone gather to support this worthwhile event.

What would your advice be to staff at other schools that are new to the event? Get your student groups/leaders involved in organizing and promoting the event. Use the documents and format already created. Help your administrators understand the community service aspect and its correlation to school initiatives for students.

What do you think Goin’ Bald for Bucks teaches students about leadership, organization and community service? Students get a hands-on experience helping to organize an event and keep track of funds raised. They see the impact they are having and what they are contributing to support cancer research and patients.

How do you think Goin’ Bald for Bucks benefits schools and organizations who participate? What about the community as a whole? Hosting a Goin’ Bald for Bucks event gives participants a sense of community and caring. We share in this meaningful experience together, and seeing all those bald heads is evidence that the community really cares about helping Roswell Park fight cancer.
